At our dental practice, we welcome patients of all ages. It is now recommended that children have their first dental exam when they reach one year of age or when their first baby tooth erupts - whichever happens first. Baby teeth are needed to remain in the mouth for as long as they are needed since they perform many important functions for the child, including acting as place savers for permanent teeth which have yet to erupt, to help children to thoroughly chew food, and to allow the child to develop clear speaking habits. For this reason, children also need preventive dental care including regular dental exams, and gentle dental cleanings. At our Humble dental office, we offer fluoride treatments to help strengthen tooth enamel to prevent dental cavities. We also offer dental sealants for children. Dental sealants help to protect the flat chewing surfaces of your child’s premolars and molars. Dental sealants are actually painted onto the teeth after they are thoroughly cleaned. The dental sealants will fill in the pits and grooves that are often found on children’s teeth, making it very difficult for plaque or food debris to stick to them. Additionally, the dental sealants will act as a physical barrier to protect the teeth from tooth decay. For adults, it is recommended that they have dental cleanings and dental exams every six months, in most cases.
